Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make the team?
Students are invited to try out based on their completed interest form. For prospective students, providing links to riding videos is a great way to showcase your skill set. During the tryout the coach will ask for a series of maneuvers, may make corrections, or run through a pattern. Riders are evaluated on aptitude for learning and riding skill-set.
What classes do I show in?
We primarily show in ASHA (American Stock Horse Association) sanctioned shows. This includes showing in reining, cowhorse, pleasure and trail classes.
When are lessons?
Students will be offered one or two sessions a week for practice. Practice schedule times are limited due to arena availability. Potential practice times are listed on the interest form.
What are the requirements to being on the team?
Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA and must be passing all classes in order to travel with the team. Students must be enrolled full time (12 hours for undergraduate, 9 hours for graduate).
Can I use my own horse?
We have a limited number of school horses available. If you’re interested and able to trailer in for practices or are boarding your horse on school grounds, you can use your own horse for the team with coach approval.
Is the team expensive?
Compared to other collegiate riding teams, no. Our practices average out to less than $10 a lesson, and we offer payment plans. Hotel and show fees are covered by the team. Students are responsible for their meals and splitting and fuel costs in carpooling to shows. Those practicing twice a week will show twice a semester, and those practicing once a week will show once a semester.
Can I bring my horse to school?
Boarding spots at MTSU are available but limited. Full care board is offered at an affordable rate.. You are responsible for your own turnout and blanketing. It is imperative that you let us know if you are interested in bringing your own horse to school. We typically have a wait list of up to a year out.
